""Last night I decided to turn it on to check the speed, when I went to select the "Navigation" option at the first menu it did not not do anything, the other two options are fine.
Yogi""

We, too, have this problem, has anyone been able to resolve it yet?
thanks

I have been using a G35 just about every day since October 09. I have had the occasional screen freeze but all has otherwise been OK, until last week. I turned it on in the morning and the navigation option did not work. I pressed the reset button but that did not help either. When I connected to the PC there was only four small files but no maps. I have followed the recovery process but when the recovery file was unzipped the "mobilenavigator" file did not have an ".exe" extension as per the instructions and when opened had another "mobilenavigator" data file that was empty. There was also a notepad file confirming the correct model. On the front page of the recovery extraction there was also the same four files [gpspara[1-4].bin] that were there after my initial problem. The [G-restore] file would not unpack with the message that the file is "an unknown format or damaged" I need to get it working asap if anyone can help (even had to buy a damn directory book today yuk!]

Have borrowed my sons G35 for a comparison and notice in the recovery instructions mention is made of SDHC card. I was under the impression from the chat about the new firmware update that HC cards weren't to be used????

Greg, the G35 recovery is initiated directly from the PC.There is no need for a memory card. The G35 recovery files are copied from the PC to the flashdisk(after formatting)directly. The G35 restore file runs directly from the PC and loads all of the necessary files to the flashdisk via usb.
The G35 firmware update is the one that needs an SD card.A 1 or 2GB card is recommended.I haven't seen any mention of using a SDHC card for the firmware update only a SDHC card reader.
Cheers,Crowy.

If you read the online instructions you will see they talk about a HC card. That is the point of my question. I thought admin said not to use HC cards. (Sorry reread it and it mentions a SDHC card SLOT)
PS when I plug the G35 into my computer and turn it on the G35 screen switches to "USB disk mode". Powerdesk sees 2 extra drives which when clicked on return the message "insert disk into drive" and that is all.
he says he updated it a week or so ago but there is no compass and it shows vers 64.0.4. Is that the lates??

Greg, when you go to Navigation/Menu/Options/About, you should see software version 65.1.0.
Data version should be 27 Jan 2010.
When you go to travel kit then scroll down to About, you should see Software version Laser.20090401.E (Thats if the unit was shipped with this software version or the firmware update has been done).
Hardware version Mini V3.0.D.I.

The "insert disk into drive" message isn't a good sign though
It should show Flash disk(Drive letter) and Removable disk(Drive letter).Disconnect it then press reset on the back. Then try restarting the pc in safe mode, reconnect the gps and see if it still reads the same.If it does,go to device manager and uninstall it.Then restart your pc in normal mode and let windows reinstall it.See what happens.
When you say Recovery instructions do you mean the Firmware Update? That's the only time you need a SD card.It won't work with a HCSD card(I tried). The Flash update sequence wont initiate. The G35 Recovery and G35 Firmware update are 2 different things.
The G35 Recovery is 2 individual folders.One(g35_recovery.zip) contains the Mobilenavigator executable and 4 other files. The second one(g_restore.zip) contains all the necessary files to rebuild the G35 operating system and software. The first one is copied from the pc to the(formatted) Flashdisk(the internal memory of the G35).The second one is an executable file that restores the G35 to factory condition. This is done via the pc-usb connection. There is no memory card required. The G35 will however read HCSD cards for running third party software/music/videos etc.
Cheers,Crowy.

That's interesting, I did the the OS & Map update on my G35 (G35_OSRebuild.zip) when it was released. This updated me to Laser.20090401.E. However, I too have no compass and show only software version 64.0.4 which I thought must have been the latest. Should I instead have 65.1.0?

Admin, it appears he hasn't read the instructions correctly and did not notice that the "e" model procedure is different and downloaded the alternate updates onto a card and updated with that.
As mentioned when I plug it in it comes up with this"USB Disk Mode" message and I can proceed no further and I can't access the the 2 drives that are reported by my file manager.
The card has a MobileNavigator folder and the following files: autorun, chain, chain.lst, copytree,Drivers,NK, TINYNK.
when the card is put into the G35 an auto process starts and file copying commences.
Is there anyway I can use this to reformat the flash memory? or do I need to send it back again?

Gator,.

Have you had a look in options then Trip. to see if the compass is there and not switched on. It needs to have a tick in it to switch it on.

Then I think you need to acquire the satellites for it to work.

Thanks for the reply Grumpy,

I don't have a Compass setting in my Trip Options. Could that be a result of only having software version 64.0.4? Maybe the map/firmware upgrade I did was imcomplete.

Greg, try this.Open a command prompt window.Type format x: (where x is the drive letter of your gps flashdisk)or as windows is reporting, removable disk.Note the space between format and the drive letter.Should look something like this:

Hit enter you will see this:

Ignore the insert new disk message and hit enter.
Hopefully you will see something like this:

Hit enter again and you should see this:

The empty contents of your flashdisk may also pop up.
Close command prompt, then disconnect the gps from the pc.Now reconnect it and see if you now have a Flash disk instead of removable disk.Cheers,Crowy
