I have got/used a M35 unit for about six months (also with Speed Alert enabled). Have got one update around July 09. It was good until a couple of weeks ago when it started getting errors ("invalid trip" error, losing favourites, slow in getting sat-fixed). So i tried updating with the last on Jan2010 download. Several attempts failed with "cannot write to SD card". So I check the 4GB SD card on a separate card reader and found that only about 10MB free and several folders cannot be viewed/copied. I backed the whole card and then reformatted with FAT32 option by Windows Explorer; I then copied back all files back to the SD and then do the update. This time it worked - got the updated successful message. BUT on restarting the M35 and going to Navigation Menu I got the message "(I) Map Data Not Found. Please contact Support". Looks like the SD card no longer recognised by the M35, ie it makes no differences if the card is removed. I did run the update again and also reset the unit several times. No changes.

Please Help !!!

Thanks.

It sounds like the update process failed somewhere between the first update and the last backup, in between formatting your card.
As you have the 4GB map version from teh M35, it would be best if you sent the SD card back to us for a new rebuild (and update).
we'll also check your card integrity as well.
here's the link for the RMA:

Thanks club_admin for your prompt reply.
If that is the only option then I will send the card back for rebuild. However as we plan to be on a trip this long weekend and I am not sure if I can have the card back in time (by this Friday), so is there anything I can do to fix the problem, even temporary ?
I do have an ealier backup (which might have been created when I first bought the unit). I did try a full restore with this version (using card reader) but the M35 gives the error "Cannot read map. Incorrect version" even though all the files' time-stamps looked correct (all back in Feb 2009).
Could it be with the way the card is formatted (Vista/FAT32) ? Or were there some hidden files not available from the backup ? Is there a code/serial-no for each unit/SDcard ?

Thanks
M35 user.

there could be a multitude of things we could try, but it would be hit and miss. Essentially there are copy protected files which are built around the unit ID (chassis/serial number). on early generation M series GPS, these were created and changed by the device so that even if you applied a full software backup it wouldnt match the internal codec. this was an earlier form of copy protection for the software on board.
PM us with your address and we'll see what we can do for you.

I have got the rebuilt SD card back and things are back to working now. Thanks for your prompt action. I have some questions, (1) to backup the new SD card, is it just by copying the MobileNavigator folder (with an SD card reader) to my backup drive ? and restoring by copying that back ? (2) I also tried to restore my "favourites" from a previous backup by replacing the one in the card but my old favourites are not shown in the M35. Is this (restoring favs) can be done with my previously backup version ?
Thanks again.

Yes. I go back to GPS Main Menu, turn the unit off, put the SD card in the PC slot or card reader, then just copy the MN (from it's drive, probably J) to my C drive. I close the J and re-open the C at a different place - NOTE some people (instead) recommend doing a "Safely remove hardware" - usually the icon down in the right hand side of your screen (may have to click the expand-icons icon)
THEN when i put the SD card back in the GPS, I do a reset using the stylus to poke the hole.

For the minor inconvenience of resetting date, time and calibration - you have a re-booted system, which will pick up any changes - did you reset, after you updated your Favourites

Always use a card reader NOT Activ Syns, always Reset.

M35 - 'I/M' skins (15 May 10)with Shell, scty, hard ON/OFF sw, updating with SDHC card reader

Thanks drifter-paul for your very thorough how-to guide. I have done the backup of the card and hopefully will make things easier if there is a need for it later on.
However for some reasons I could not restore my Favourites.dat (from a backup copy done ealier), even with several attemps on resets/renames/deletes ... I guess I just have to (slowly) re-enter all my favourite entries again.
